Just Shows What Religion Can Do
by Joe Grundy ina child rape victim is sentenced to 100 lashes.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-21595814.
i don't know about you, i'm an atheist, but i cannot accept that any religion can justify this inhumane, brutal, wicked treatment of a child victim of rape.. there is no excuse for this behaviour on the part of a supposedly civilsed government.
it has fuck all to do with religion, it has all to do with humanity and being a 'human being'.. i have written to my mp and hope to follow this up through the un charter on childrens' rights.. anyone here booked a 'maldives luxury holiday'?.

I challenged a Dub out in service
by LisaRose ini was sitting in my car, finishing an egg mcmuffin before going to the grocery store when i noticed a dubbie going around talking to people in the parking lot.
i thought the chances were good she would approach me, and i decided i was going to do more than decline to take the pamphlet.. after i verified she was a jw, i said that i was a former member.
i said "do you know what the awake said in 1969?

(I never was a dub).
Yesterday they called at my door. A guy in his 70s, a lady in her 60s. I was suffering from the flu and I really was not in the mood, and I was ready to wade in.
But - they were polite and were smiling and looked happy - and do you know what? I asked myself 'Do I really want to say things that might destroy - for them - what is the basis of their lives?
So I didn't. I smiled and said 'no thanks' and they smiled and said 'thanks for the smile and being polite' and they moved on.
They are not my responsibilty and to be honest if at their stage in life they want to cling to their craziness but it makes them happy, well, so be it.

The Other Side of the Indian Rape Story
by fulltimestudent ini'm posting this story, not to defend an indefensible act, but to try to provide some balance.
the fact is that so many indians exist in a poverty so deep that it's difficult for westerners to even understand.
the youngest of the rapists in the now world known rape story, according to this uk, independent newspaper story, grew up in that world that seems hopeless.

(Entering the fray).
I know a little about rape. As a cop for 30 years I investigated more cases than I want to remember. On a personal level, my daughter was raped.
This was an horrific attack and should be dealt with in such a way as to reflect the horror.
But it's also an opportunity to discuss why it happened. Why are attitudes to victims (and potential victims) such that these things happen? It's not only women that get raped, but why in so many cultures are women so devalued? Why is there a culture of child brides in so many places (not excluding the US)?
Why do so many fundamentalists in so many religions glory in the OT accounts of genocide, etc., but more relevant to this issue, the capture and enslavement of young women as sexual slaves?
Those of us who consider ourselves as 'civilised' (whatever that means) could make a start by challenging the god(s) of the OT who not only condoned but encouraged rape.

Yahweh was a Cannanite god Ashtoreth his wife...before the Jews!! Unreal!

That as well, of course, but 'Stavros/Stavra' is a common greek name - due, no doubt, to the influence of the GO church.

(post continued) 'Stavros' = meaning 'cross' would be a hindrance.

Well, speaking as a non-controversionalist here, I just watched a few of the BBC Youtube episodes as linked to above. Thought-provoking, for sure, and they have prompted me to go off and not only research the credentials of the presenter but review her material and sources. This is what we do as sentient and enquiring people, I think. Entirely different to what members of cults or high control organisations do, which is to 'lock down' at the forst sign of enemy invasion.
Just as an aside, I first joined this board a long time ago to seek more info about my JW neighbour. His name was 'Stavros'. The lady presenter of the youtube series incorporates 'stavra'. I often wondered about my JW neighbour, as he climbed the greasy pole of 'privileges' whether the name '

Completely and Utterly Pissed Off
by Joe Grundy ini had a surprise visit this afternoon from my recently-divorced filipina wife.
her relationship with new boyfriend is not going so well.
i made her a coffee, was non-committal.

I posted this elsewhere, but it's worth putting it here too for the avoidance of doubt.
Thanks for the response.
I should make it clear that while I am a little bit stupid some of the time, or even quite a lot stupid quite a lot of the time, I am not stupid enough any of the time to get involved with my ex-wife again, however compelling her charms may be.
She's practising (I think) what seems to me to be a common trait in SEA ladies in finding and keeping open, options. Sorry for the generalisation, I can only comment from my experience.
What prompted my post was the Cyprus Mail story and just how badly SEA workers (and others) are treated in what is an EU country. I won't go on about it here (I have, and continue to do so, elsewhere). -

I had a surprise visit this afternoon from my recently-divorced Filipina wife. Her relationship with new boyfriend is not going so well. I made her a coffee, was non-committal. She held out the hook and her not inconsiderable charms, and is no doubt trying to keep all possible options open.
But all general negative opinions about Filipinas were put away when I read this news story: http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/killed-drunk-driver-she-swept-pavement/20121223
A 28 year old Filipina was killed by a drunk driver as she swept the pavement at 0640 am. Never mind, the authorities hope to sort it out so that the killer can spend Xmas with his family.
I lived in CY 2005-2010. I had a Filipina girlfriend as well as a later Filipina fiancee who became my wife. IME, Cypriots saw Filipinas as slaves/concubines. Misogynistic, xenophobic bastards.
I have e-mailed the Phils Consul in CY, who is a switched-on US educated woman to see if there is a fund to repatriate/support this lady. I don't hold my breath for a reply.
Cyprus is going down the pan as the most bankrupt of the eurozone countries. Right now, I think it serves it right.
Sorry for the rant. -

Respect as always and thanks for this. I had never heard of this guy. Just one more 'nutter' who slipped under the radr, perhaps.
